2019 Annual Report
The 2019 Ditikeni annual report celebrates “20 Years of Broad-based Empowerment” for Ditikeni. The artist Hussein Salim was commissioned to create an artwork to commemorate this milestone. His painting encapsulates the themes of “Growth and Protection”, with its twenty fresh green trees signifying growth and sustainability, and twenty blue fence rods lined in a protective row. The painting is on permanent display at Ditikeni’s offices.
Hussein Salim was born in Karim Sudan in 1966, and along with other Sudanese artists and critics during the 1970s and 1980s conflict, started exploring the dialogue between the importance of heritage and contemporary Sudanese art. With his rich impasto paintings, Salim reflects this dialogue through the use of personal symbolism of his dual African and Islamic identity. He is currently based in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. He has exhibited in Sudan, the UK, France, Norway, Italy, Spain, Japan and South Africa.
